Last week I was invited to a food bloggers event hosted by new street food traders Big Papa’s at their new 7 days a week home, The Sunflower Lounge. A night of yummy food and great company followed in this relaxed venue, and we spent a few of hours drinking, eating and chatting between ourselves and to Anthony and Craig (the two man team behind Big Papa’s).
Starters and desserts are priced at a pocket friendly £5, whilst you get the option to pick a main course and 2 sides for just £10! I think this is fantastic value for money, especially with how much food you get!
I couldn’t resist trying their Pulled Cola Brisket Bun with sides of Cajun Sweet Potato Fries and Mac & Cheese. For me the mac & cheese was missing an indulgent, creamy sauce so it was a little dry. However this didn’t deter from it being a great side as the flavours were spot on, with the blend of cheeses and hint of paprika working wonderfully together to create a tasty little dish. My other side of sweet potato fries were amazing and the star of the show for me! They were so light, crispy and tasty, and some of the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever eaten!
The pulled cola brisket bun was fantastic too. The bun was light and soft, yet it held its shape with the generous beef and creamy coleslaw filling. The pulled beef was so tender and full of deliciously smoky, BBQ-rich flavours; whilst I couldn’t taste the cola, it definitely added an extra depth and flavour to the beef, resulting in a sweet, sticky sauce that coated the pulled brisket.
Calum enjoyed the Buttermilk Fried Chicken with the same sides as me. Whilst the vegetarians in the group tucked into the Mac & Cheese with Butternut Squash and Poached Egg which also went down really well.
At only £10 for a delicious, freshly cooked and generous sized main, it really is an absolute bargain! Whilst the menu is small, there’s something for everyone on offer and I could have happily eaten it all. However they’ve recently released their new, extended menu and personally I can’t wait to go back and try it all!
They’re in a great location too as The Sunflower Lounge is only a short walk from the Bullring or New Street Station, and I couldn’t recommend it enough for a lunch or dinner destination next time you’re in town.
Disclosure: I was invited to the blogger’s event and our food was complimentary, however I wasn’t required to write a review and all thoughts are honest and my own
