Las Iguanas

A few weeks ago I was invited down to the recently opened Las Iguanas in Coventry to try out their food and cocktails. I’d never been to this chain restaurant before, and I have to say I’ve not become a fan from my first visit…

Admittedly I liked the fun, vibrant and bright atmosphere and decor, and the service really couldn’t have been better. The staff were friendly and attentive, without being overbearing, and a good knowledge of the menu was shown throughout as they guided us through our experience there and made recommendations.

Cocktails:

We started with some Piña Coladas off the 241 cocktail menu which is available all day Sunday to Wednesday and from 12-7pm then from 10pm-late Thursday to Saturday. Whilst they were delicious, we felt that the portion sizes were very small (like 1 cocktail split between 2 glasses!) and were just left wanting more.

My second cocktail of a Raspberry Mojito was a much better size (and not on the 241 menu) and a really light, refreshing drink. Although I’ve had much better mojitos!

Food:

For my main I ordered the Steak Fajitas. A running theme throughout our experience was the generous portion sizes – my meal came with 4 mini wraps, plenty of filling and various dips. The steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and so succulent, although I wasn’t too keen on the flavouring used to coat it. Overall it was a tasty enough main but I wasn’t wowed.

Other mains we tried included the Smoked Chipotle Chicken Burrito and Blazing Bird. Whilst the latter was a huge portion size (for saying it’s on light lunch menu!), so you get your money’s worth, both dishes were too spicy for our liking and not enjoyable at all due to this.

Although sides of Sweet Potato Fries and Nachos were both done relatively well.

We somehow found room for dessert too and me and my Mum both tucked into the Dulce de Leche Macadamia Cheesecake. The cheesecake was delicious and the stand out of the whole meal. It was so creamy,  smooth and utterly moreish – a proper indulgent dessert, especially when topped with plenty of the rich sweet toffee sauce.

Overall:

Would I revisit Las Iguanas? The short answer – no.

I just wouldn’t pick it as my restaurant of choice if I was organising a meal out – it wouldn’t even enter my list of options when dining out in Birmingham. However I wouldn’t refuse to go there if friends or family booked us in eat here. Whilst the food didn’t blow me away by any means, most of it was nice enough and the (non 241) cocktails were relatively decent (but by no means on a level with cocktails I’ve had in Birmingham).

Disclosure: I was invited to review Las Iguanas in Coventry and all food and drinks were complimentary. However I wasn’t required to write a review and all opinions are honest and my own
